Joe Champelli

President/Co-Owner

Joe joined EPS in 2014, bringing 25 years of experience in machinery design, operations, and project management. As President, Joe helps EPS provide its clients with unrivaled live guest experiences—from designing mechanical solutions for dazzling kinetic architecture, to project managing a new nighttime spectacular for one of the largest theme parks in the world. Joe began his career in Las Vegas working on high-profile special projects including the Pirate Battle at Treasure Island and the Cirque du Soleil “O” showroom. While directing Automated Rigging for the Siegfried and Roy show, Joe developed his appreciation for robust machine design. Prior to joining EPS, Joe used his knowledge of automation and mechanical design to drive growth for Fisher Technical Services and ZFX, while gaining invaluable experience in performer flying. As an ETCP-certified professional in Theatre and Arena Rigging and ETCP Trainer, Joe also served as an associate professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he taught Rigging, CAD Design and Stagecraft. Joe has volunteered with ESTA’s Technical Standards Program since 2005, helping create ANSI safety standards for the entertainment industry. In his free time Joe enjoys playing board games and throwing hatchets with his wife of 25 years and their three children.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Illinois State University

MFA in Technical Production, Penn State University

First introduction to the industry:

My high school had great facilities and a great program for introducing students to all aspects of technical theatre.

What I listen to at work:

When I’m focused deep in a design, I will put on a favorite album and put it on repeat. This behavior does not tend to make me many friends. I’m also a news junkie and will sometimes put on a news station as background noise while I work.

Dream Vacation:

My dream vacation is to go to one of those “Sandals” resorts where you can get a hut that’s offshore on the ocean. It looks like fun—to be able to sleep in the ocean air and then dive into the water for a swim.

When I'm not at work...

I enjoy riding my motorcycle and spending time with my family. We enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, and throwing hatchets.
